Notes

Colorado Discover Ability has partnered with local health care providers from Grand Junction to design a unique, 3-day camp experience for children 6-13 years old. Each 3-day camp is at the Kiwanis Camp in the Grand Mesa National Forest in Western Colorado.

Camp activities include rafting, kayaking, hiking, horseback riding, crafts, games, fishing, outdoor education, swimming and camp fires.

Camp Freedom is staffed by volunteers who have a special interest in children with disabilities and who can facilitate a safe, energetic environment. The founding volunteers have a wide range of expertise and experience working with children who have disabilities: physicians, physical therapists, and occupational therapists. Colorado Discover Ability, an established adaptive outdoor recreation organization, advises and supports the camp in administration, logistics, and coordination.

Camp Freedom includes two, 3-day, weekend camps:

  • Camp Freedom-Raccoon Ranch provides children with developmental delay, physical and cognitive disabilities, an opportunity to explore the outdoors with activities designed to facilitate success and wilderness enjoyment. The focus for these campers is teamwork and adventure through exposure to new experiences and peer interaction. Creative activity planning and spirited volunteer staff are key to this camp.
  • Camp Fredom-Eagles Landing provides children with physical disabilities and minimal cognitive deficits an outdoors camp experience with activities designed to build self-esteem and friendships, while discovering their potential. The goal is to find commonalities and support others who have physical challenges.
