Christian Berets, founded in 1970 by Pastor Don and Helen Crooker, originally began with the dream of establishing an opportunity for persons with various disabilities to have the opportunity to have a Christ-centered camping experience, Christian Berets is now in its thirty-fourth year of continuous ministry as a non-profit, 501(c)3, non-denominational, Christian organization.
Camping will remain at the heart of the Christian Berets' ministry, yet there are many other needs we feel God is calling us to address. In addition to the Joy Sounds Choir, which is composed solely of people who have different abilities, our Program Director, Brice Ringsby, networks and helps facilitate other churches' ministries to the differently-abled. Another purpose for the ministry is to awaken Christ's Church to the call of reaching those who are differently-abled. Working together, we hope to bring a year-round, abundant-life experience.
Camping for individuals with disabilities was the beginning of Christian Berets. Our Personal Growth Retreats for individuals with developmental disabilities provide opportunities for recreation, relaxation, campfire experiences, off site visits, and a positive spiritual emphasis. Participants take part in a number of outdoor games and activities with supportive supervision by our qualified staff counselors. Our purpose is to help meet physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs in a relaxed and positive environment. Activities include:
