The Steps

By Carleton Rivers, MS, RD, LD

What constitutes a successful grocery shopper? Is it the amount of planning they do, the money they save, or the nutritional content of the foods and ingredients they buy? All of the above! Follow these five easy steps to become your own successful grocery shopper.

2 people grocery shoppingStep #1: Check out the weekly ads for your favorite grocery stores. Use free smartphone apps like Flipp and Favado to view and clip weekly ads or visit the stores website to view their weekly ads. Most stores run their sales from Wednesday to Tuesday so make sure you do your shopping at the beginning of the sale to ensure items are not sold out.

Step #2: Clip coupons for items on this week’s shopping list and staple items that you always need. Visit grocery store websites to digitally clip or print coupons. Free smartphone apps like iBotta, Checkout51, and Snap by Groupon allow shoppers to upload grocery receipts to receive cash back!

Step #3: Plan meals for an entire week or month to save extra money and time. Build weekly meals around store sales, coupons, what you already have in your kitchen, and your weekly schedule to save the most money and avoid wasting food!

Step #4: Make your grocery list from weekly meal plans but don’t forget staple items like rice, beans, and pasta!

Step #5: Designate an hour or two each week (or each month depending on how you plan) to shop for groceries and organize items at home. Make sure you freeze any meats or breads that won’t be used right away!
