Step 6: Use Scenarios to Aid in Teaching


During the tutor training program, it is essential that the instructor utilize real-life scenarios to check for understanding (Houston-Wilson, Lieberman et al. 1997). For example, if the peer tutor is teaching a child a throwing skill, and the child does not understand the instructions, the tutor is asked, "What should you do now?" The peer tutor would have to say or show a demonstration of the activity for the correct answer. If the student then exhibits the appropriate behavior, the peer tutor should give appropriate feedback. The instructor should give at least 5 to 10 different scenarios to make sure the peer tutor understands what he or she is being asked to do within the parameters of the program. If the tutor participates in the scenario incorrectly, the instructor should go over the concept again until the tutor fully understands what is expected.
