Step 4: Develop Communication Techniques


The next step in the training program is training the tutor in the student's mode of communication. It is important for the peer tutor to understand the student's full expressive and receptive means of communicating. For example, if the child is nonverbal, how will the peer tutor know if the student needs to use the rest room, if the skill is too hard, or if the skill is too simple? In addition, if the student has a behavior problem, it is important for the peer tutor to know what words, activities, or expressions will send the child into a negative behavior pattern and what to do if such behaviors appear. Sample modes of communication include sign language, communication boards, gestures, or augmentative talkers* (a machine that talks). Tutors need to become familiar with these communication devices so that they can use them effectively in their teaching.
