Step 1: Develop an Application Procedure

One rule of thumb when setting up peer tutoring programs is that tutors should want to participate. Some programs use tutoring as punishment. This is not conducive to fostering positive relationships. In addition, we believe the desire to tutor should be intrinsic. Therefore, there should be very little extrinsic reward for tutoring. Buttons, stickers, or certificates at the end of the program are fine, but higher grades or monetary rewards would be inappropriate. Some programs throw an ice cream or pizza party at the end of the year, and that is acceptable. Parties such as these allow students to celebrate the year's accomplishments. To ensure intrinsic motivation and strong desire, many schools choose to have tutors apply for positions just as they would apply for a job.
