Sitting volleyball’s origin dates back to the 1950s when the game was used for rehabilitation of World War II veterans. Later, sitting volleyball debuted at the 1980 Paralympic Games in Arnhem, Netherlands.  Currently, sitting volleyball is governed by the United States Paralympics, while USA Volleyball is the National Governing Body for the sport and is also a sponsor of sitting volleyball. The first men’s team competed at the 1988 Seoul Paralympic Games and the women’s team debuted at the 2004 Athens Paralympic Games.
