Director of Athletics and Recreation

Image of Peggy Turner When Peggy Turner made the 667-mile trek from Houston, TX to Birmingham, AL in June 2009, she was yet again reminded of how small the adaptive sports world can be. Peggy whos worn a variety of hats including passionate advocate, director, volunteer, photographer, teamleader has devoted her life to the growth and success of adaptive sports and recreation. She is a well-known, friendly face who regularly "meets" the grown-up versions of the youth she coached or mentored decades before. As Director of Athletics and Recreation for Lakeshore, Peggy develops and oversees the management of adaptive sports and recreation programs for youth and adults with physical disabilities and chronic health conditions, including injured military men and women, at both community-based sports and the recreation and fitness facility. Her background as therapeutic recreation manager in Pasadena for 21 years, then manager for the Houston Parks and Recreation Department for four years, makes her a well-versed spokesperson in her field. Devoted to the success of individuals with physical disabilities of all ages, Pegy focuses on what individuals can do, not their disabilities. Her devotion to the field is further pronounced by the fact that she has volunteered or served as a photographer for the last six Paralympic Games.
