Notes

The YMCA of Greater Louisville is proud of the senior programming and day care options available for adults ages 50 and over. The Active Older Adult (AOA) program, designed for independent older adults, is offered at eight area locations throughout the Greater Louisville Community.

Active Older Adults (AOA)

AOA is meant to provide activities for independent older adults. The goals of the group are to assist the over 50 community in staying active-physically, mentally, and socially. Daily and monthly activities are planned which include food, fun, exercise, and time to socialize and meet new friends.

Each YMCA of Greater Louisville Branch offers various classes geared specifically to the AOA group. Daily aerobic and water exercise programs are offered to meet the needs of the AOA members and include:
  • AFYAP (Arthritis Foundation/YMCA Aquatic Program) - AFYAP is a low impact water class incorporating exercises to help maintain or increase range of motion and muscular strength. The AFYAP Program provides an opportunity for those with arthritis to meet others with arthritis. Water exercise can help relieve pain and stiffness and improve joint flexibility.
  • Land Exercise - a low impact cardiovascular workout designed for those who don't move as quickly as they used to. The class incorporates a cardiovascular portion, strength portion, and stretch/relaxation.
  • Water Exercise - shallow water exercise class geared toward those 50 years and older. This is a quick 45-minute low impact cardiovascular workout.
  • PACE (People with Arthritis Can Exercise) - A land based exercise program to increase joint flexibility and range of motion.
