Notes

The Therapeutic Recreation Program provides recreational programs and adapted sports activities for both youth and adults with all types of physical and intellectual disabilities. The program strives to provide an outlet for participants to be involved in constructive recreational pursuits.

The goals of the Therapeutic Recreation Program are to increase the social opportunities of the participants, to help the individual become a functional participant in a recreational activity, and to develop a higher level of physical, mental, and emotional well being. The Therapeutic Recreation Program offers a variety of activities, special events, and programs.

One program is the Adapted Sports Program which focuses on individuals with physical disabilities. This is a community-based wheelchair and adapted sports program offering clinics, classes and recreational experiences in the following: wheelchair tennis, wheelchair fencing, track & field, wheelchair rugby, wheelchair basketball, power soccer, handcycling, adapted cycling, sailing, and air guns. The new additions for 2007 are a sled hockey program and an adapted golf program.

The Sled Hockey program is a wonderful collaboration between five organizations: Operation Comfort, The Rampage Hockey Team, Brook Army Medical Center, Northwoods Ice Center and the Parks & Recreation Department. The new adapted golf program is supported through a generous grant from the USGA (United States Golf Association) as well as a local San Antonio family. The program is called the Christina Trevino Adapted Golf Program.

Another program includes the Children's Summer Program which is offered during the summer months of June and July. The Childrens Summer Program will change in 2007 to offer a variety of day camps and clinics at various sites throughout the city. Sessions will be from one day long to all week long. There is a fee for participation and advanced registration and payment is required.

A Year Round Adult Day Program is also offered through the Therapeutic Recreation Program and operates Mondays - Fridays from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Frank Garrett Community Center. The fee for this program is $20.00 per month. Call for application information and availability of space for this program.

Community events are offered throughout the year, which include dances, parades, and special events. These events are open to all persons in the community with a disability and their family and friends.
