What is a Goal?

A goal is an objective; something to strive for. Goals are said to direct an individual's attention to relevant activities and increase motivation to achieve a certain result. These goals can be both long- and short-term, and may reflect both outcome and process. The long-term or outcome goals represent the ultimate destination, the "big dream". Process or short-term goals are daily actions or behaviors that direct you to that final result. For example, a long-term goal may be, "I want to fit in my clothes from last year" and the short-term goals may include working out three times per week and cutting back on junk food. A common long-term goal for athletic teams concerns making it to a tournament or winning a championship. The process or short-term goals would deal with the amount of work put forth in everyday practice, times on runs and other specific goals that can be measured and assessed throughout the season.
