NCHPAD Video Corner: New Exercise Clips on Persons with Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities

Not on the Sidelines: Living and Playing with a Disability

Ben Achtenberg and Karen McMillan, http://www.ncpad.org/689/3132/2005-04-01#9, 26 minutes, 2000, ISBN 1-57295-280-6

The award-winning film, Not on the Sidelines, features four people whose lives were altered by an injury or illness during their early adulthood years. They all demonstrate how competitive sports were a key component in their rehabilitation, including flying, skiing, and playing wheelchair tennis and sled hockey. They also discuss the emotional and psychological struggles they faced in learning to accept their lives with a disability.

This is a great learning tool for the classroom, as this film documents the trials and tribulations of living with a disability and demonstrates the endless possibilities of what people with disabilities can do.
