Planning Inclusively


Planning PE lessons is not an option when dealing with any mixed ability group. Prior planning is essential.
  1. Decide on the aims of the PE session, and on the activities you will do to achieve these:
    What is the central purpose of the lesson?
    What activities will be performed?
    What type of groupings will be used?
    What instructions or prompts will I use?
    Write down these as a lesson plan, or choose a lesson plan from one of your resources.

  2. Read through the lesson plan, think through each stage of the lesson, and think about the children in the group. Ask yourself:
    "Who am I excluding if I carry out this activity?"

  3. For parts of the lesson that are not inclusive, the next question to ask is: "How can I adapt the...
    • movement form
    • environment
    • equipment
    • rules
    • instructions
    so everyone will be able to participate?"

    The challenge is to adapt an activity so that everyone is participating, and everyone is working on the same theme or capacity.

    Prepare in advance any adaptations to equipment or the environment. For changes in rules and instructions, write down what rules / instructions will be used. It is not always easy to remember these in the middle of a lesson, while you are surrounded by eager, active children.
