EveryBody Walks! Collaborative Monthly Theme: "Walk Together"

The weather is getting warmer and it’s a good time to reconnect with family and friends during a walk. Take the time to teach new walkers how to be safe and aware while walking outside.  Explore local parks and have adventures as you spend time together outside. Take note- what aspects of your community, streets and parks make you feel the most safe as you walk with your family and friends? #WalkTogether

The Apple Watch will soon track fitness for wheelchair users

Fitness trackers routinely measure physical activity such as running and cycling and encourage people to stand up and walk around throughout the day. But if you're in a wheelchair, you're out of luck.  Apple wants to change that with an upcoming Apple Watch feature.

Apple partnered with two groups that promote physical fitness in disability populations, the Lakeshore Foundation of Birmingham, Alabama, and the Challenged Athletes Foundation of San Diego. The two groups recruited about 300 people in wheelchairs for more than 3,000 hours of activity research.

Jeff Underwood, Lakeshore's president and CEO, said wheelchair users tend to be more sedentary than the general population because they face more barriers to physical activity. Although having a fitness device alone won't make someone fit, he said, having one sends a message that inactivity shouldn't be the norm.

The feature is part of a free software update, watchOS 3.0, expected later this year. No new hardware is required.

CDC-NPS Parks, Trails, and Health Workbook

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Park Service (NPS) have created a new tool to assist communities and we need your help spreading the word. Well-designed parks and trails can promote physical activity, reduce stress, and provide environmental benefits.

The Parks, Trails, and Health Workbook: A Tool for Planners, Parks and Recreational Professionals, and Health Practitioners is quick guide for incorporating public health considerations in the development and improvement of a park or trail. This tool can help start collaborative discussions about the health benefits of parks and trails and prepare for a health impact assessment (HIA).
