National Walking Summit (Recap)

The 2015 National Walking Summit took place on October 28-30th in Washington, DC.  NCHPAD attended to represent the inclusion of people with disability in the walking movement and presented to Summit attendees on the How I Walk campaign.  Key messages and outcomes in regards to inclusion were: 

  • Walking is a right!  The health benefits of walking are so profound that denying access is like denying a basic human right. - Dr. Robert Bullard, Opening Keynote

New Walking Related Tools:

  • Transportation and Health Tool (THT)- The THT was developed by the U.S. Department of Transportation and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to provide easy access to data that practitioners can use to examine the health impacts of transportation systems.
  • The American Council on Exercise (ACE)'s Walk This Way! A Guide for Developing Community and Individual Walking Programs
  • ACE's Walk the Talk! A Fitness Professional's Guide to Developing Walking Programs
  • How To Create an Inclusive Walking Club by the NYS Developmental Disabilities Planning Council 2015, Inclusive Fitness Initiative

American Public Health Association (APHA) Annual Meeting (Recap)

143rd APHA Annual Meeting & Exposition:
Oct. 31 - Nov. 4, 2015, Chicago

NCHPAD shared resources and information in the Expo Hall and presented in the Exhibitor Theatre.  Additionally, NCHPAD's Director, Dr. James Rimmer, presented on a panel with other partners on approaches to physical activity and healthy living for people with disability.

 


Alabama State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation & Dance (ASAHPERD) Fall Conference

NCHPAD partnered with ASAHPERD, The Exercise Connection, and the Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH) on a pre-conference workshop to train physical education and health professionals on working with individuals with autism.

 


Greystone Elementary LiveFit

NCHPAD partnered with Lakeshore Foundation to host a school assembly for a local elementary school about overcoming challenges through adaptation and inclusion.  Students learned the meaning of these words and how to adapt three activities to be inclusive. 

 


Walkable Communities in Birmingham, Alabama

Dr. Kate Kraft, National Coalition Director for America Walks, came to NCHPAD's HQ in Birmingham to learn about the city's efforts to create walkable communities.  Alabama is known for it's robust outdoors and examples of efforts have included creating new trail systems and outdoor spaces for recreation.

  


NCHPAD Partners Meeting

This month we hosted some of our partners to discuss the future of building healthy, inclusive communities.  Inclusive communities provide people with disability equal access and opportunities for healthy living.
