Celebrating National Nutrition Month

 By Carleton Rivers, RD, LD

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (formerly the American Dietetic Association) is the “world’s largest organization of food and nutrition professionals.” The Academy is a multidimensional organization that provides valuable information and career-enhancing resources for current and future dietetics professionals as well as an array of nutrition information specifically designed for the public. In 1973, the Academy created a National Nutrition Week occurring every March which evolved into the National Nutrition Month by 1980. This campaign was created to spread nutrition education messages to the public while promoting the profession of dietetics. Each year the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics constructs a new theme that emphasizes “the importance of making informed food choices and developing sound eating and physical activity habits.”

The theme for National Nutrition Month® 2014 is “Enjoy the Taste of Eating Right.” This year’s campaign provides materials on how to incorporate taste and nutrition into building healthy meals that meet the Dietary Guidelines recommendations. Get started today by checking out the Handouts and Tipsheets created by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics for National Nutrition Month® 2014. These resources are designed for kids as well as adults and include activity handouts and tasty recipes. For more interactive materials, visit the Interactive Games, Quiz, and Videos page located on the Academy’s website.

So this March, celebrate National Nutrition Month® by learning how to eat right while enjoying every bite!
