Procedure

Two separate groups (Group One and Group Two) of study participants took part in study activities that lasted for 7 months. Group One's study duration was from March 2001-September 2001. Group Two activities took place between June 2001 and February 2002. These activities included 3 clinical exams conducted on Saturdays. At the baseline clinic, subjects were randomly assigned to intervention or control groups. All received a t-shirt as a gift for participating in the study at the time of this random drawing. The intervention group then attended a series of six workshops, held at University Hospital, each 4 hours long. The workshops took place twice a month, for three months, followed by phone counseling by project staff for four months after the last workshop. Additionally, experimental subjects in the study received individualized feedback in a session with the workshop facilitators approximately two weeks after the workshop's conclusion at the second clinical exam day. The control group went through the same pre- and post-assessment process as the intervention group, but did not attend the workshops, individualized coaching session, or take part in the telephone follow-up counseling sessions. Participants received $45.00 to cover expenses each time they attended an assessment clinic or a workshop session.
